Former Hutchinson police officer Mike Robinson is in training with the Kansas Highway Patrol in Salina.
The Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, operated by the University of Kansas, educates about 400 trainees and about 4,000 veteran officers annually.
One graduate is former Hutchinson police officer Mike Robinson, whose basic training helped save his life when a motorist shot him in the leg during a traffic stop in 2005. Robinson was able to follow through and call for assistance.
Now Robinson is preparing to apply his five years of experience and training in a new career with the Kansas Highway Patrol.
