ON THE HILL

DIETS RICH IN TRADITION

On the Hill: Devon Mihesuah

A cookbook by KU professor Devon Mihesuah (above) highlights the healthy qualities of an indigenous diet.

Americans eat too much and exercise too little. For American Indians, the resulting health challenges are especially serious. KU professor Devon Mihesuah confronts the issues directly in her award-winning cookbook "Recovering Our Ancestors' Gardens: Indigenous Recipes and Guide to Diet and Fitness."

Mihesuah, Cora Lee Beers Price Teaching Professor in International Cultural Understanding, is a member of the Choctaw Nation, which provides rich perspective in her research and her classrooms. Like many KU colleagues, she is committed to applying knowledge and experience in practical, effective ways.
