KU Works for Kansas

Kansans have long been committed to education and learning. The founders of our state recognized that Kansas would never prosper without institutions of higher learning, and 142 years after the founding of the University of Kansas, that belief in the power of education still motivates us.

KU works for Kansas in so many ways and in so many places throughout our state. A few examples are detailed here.

As you see on this site, the benefits provided by the university touch the smallest child who receives care from a KU-trained doctor, support the law enforcement officers who receive training that helps them stay safe, and deepen the research that helps us understand our past and plan our future.

KU is dedicated to knowledge and learning. Our first priority has always been teaching, and it makes all of us proud to see our students walk down the Hill at graduation and go on to productive careers and successful lives.

These careers get a boost from students' work in the classroom and in the community, such as our pharmacy externships that place students in pharmacies around Kansas as they seek their degrees.

But KU also is a research university, and KU researchers are at the front lines in the fight against cancer, developing drugs and therapies that will one day rid us of this and other diseases. Some of our scientists are studying new ways of producing fuel from plants that will help free us from our dependence on fossil fuel, while others are surveying Kansas' water supplies.

These discoveries don't stay in the laboratories, because KU is dedicated to serving the citizens of our state by sharing information that enhances opportunities for happier, healthier lives.

Through telemedicine and our medical outreach efforts, KU doctors help Kansans throughout the state, saving patients time and money. Our work with children helps them gain the skills they need to reach their full potential. And our training program for public servants in southwest Kansas brings a KU education to their doorsteps.

It is a testament to our state's founders that the University of Kansas exists, but our work could not continue without dedicated KU students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

The vision to create a brighter future, shared by Kansas pioneers of yesterday and the KU community today, still inspires us. The vision is detailed here to the people we serve - the people of Kansas.
