On the Hill: Biodiesel initiative lab and soybeans

KU's Biodiesel Initiative Laboratory (above) provides low-cost testing for producers of biodiesel from soybeans (above inset).

The soybeans grown by Kansas farmers -- $550 million worth annually -- are an important raw material for biodiesel. Now chemical engineers at the University of Kansas are undertaking dynamic research on the promising fuel.

The KU Biodiesel Initiative is perfecting refinement methods and providing low-cost, reliable testing to Kansas makers of biodiesel. Such innovations not only will boost profits for Kansas farmers but also could slash America's dependence on foreign oil and supply motorists with a cleaner-burning, renewable fuel.
